Matt Wedel is a paleontologist specializing in sauropod dinosaurs (and, even more specifically, the vertebrae of sauropod dinosaurs).
But he very easily could have become something else. Many somethings else.
He just wrote a piece where he remembers five pivotal conversations in his past, chance chats with other people that (though he wouldn’t know it at the time) ultimately shaped the trajectory of his career and his life. And then he rewrites each conversation . . . changes one detail (they weren’t in their office, I finished my sentence, she approached a subject from a slightly different angle, etc.) and speculates about how differently the rest of his life may have been.
It’s pure navel-gazing, but he’s got an interesting bellybutton, so I’m all for it. I wonder what my own “five conversations” might look like . . ..
